Excellent fun! August 26, 2010 j2d2 Fun game for all ages. Giving each other 'helpful hints' for tile placement makes this a very interactive game for the family.
I'd play this instead of watching a movie anyday! August 10, 2010 Chommy This game is fantastic and has provided hours of fun in our house, having become something of a Christmas tradition. After a few practice games (to get used to the rules, which are complicated at first) I was hooked. It can be played with 2-6 players and can last an hour or more, or finished early before the tiles are all used up, depending on how many expansion packs you use. It's a game of strategy and luck - you can plan to an extent, until your opponent picks up a piece which allows them to steal your castle... You never know what you're going to end up with!
Expansion packs:
I have had a few interesting games with the Count (one of the expansion packs) as my husband is fiercely competitive and the Count can swing the game completely in one move! Do not use the Count if you are tired! The Inns and Cathedrals is also very good - adds alternative road formations and tiles that prevent scoring on a castle unless it it finished. Also gives you a piece which acts as 2 men essentially which is useful. The river pack adds different scenery and is useful for starting farms.
I highly recommend this game but wouldn't judge it on only 1 game. It takes a while to get used to, esp if you are all learning the rules from scratch.
Hope you enjoy it!
Surprisingly good August 9, 2010 Eutony Was pleasantly surprised but how much fun this game is.
I bought it as a family game to play on holiday, but the grown-ups ended up playing after the kids were in bed. (hard to think of a stronger endorsement). In fact, if anything it's a little too much fun - definitely "just one more game" syndrome.
The gameplay is simple - there are a few rules to learn, but with only 4 'types' of landscape (town, road, farm, cloister.. actually it's 5, including river with the expansion that came with mine) and simple points based scoring it's very quick to pick up.
No strategy is certain of success, and the winner isn't usually known until the final totting up. We haven't yet had a game where someone gets so far ahead (or behind) that any of us want to give up.
Have just ordered some expansion packs to bring some more variety - not because it was getting dull, but just for fun.
carcassonne is merveilleux! July 28, 2010 crazybagpiper My 13-year-old writes: It's really good and you can play it over and over again, but it is much better with the expansion packs because when lots of people are playing the pieces in the standard pack don't go very far. Me and my cousins aged from 7-13 played it for 2 hours (it was our birthday present to one of them) and I would like my own set now!
Great fun! July 19, 2010 Sian James This is a great game. For those of you who like Settlers, Agricola and Powergrid this is another one for the games shelf. It's not as involved as the others, but is great for two player games and just as good with four players. It's also a quick game so you can have lots of games in an evening and the board will be different everytime!
