Finally July 9, 2010 Craig Houston (London, UK) At long last Microsoft have issued a OS which works and works well. In the time I have been using Windows 7, I hardly know it is there. Why could they not have done it right from the start?
Windows 7 Ultimate July 3, 2010 Mr DJ Burke I MS Windows Ultimate installed without any issues on my laptop, registered and it has been plain sailing since, its more intuitive than Vista
This really isn't worth the money June 10, 2010 Nigel S. Rankin Having waited for this to arrive and cure all Vista's short comings I am thoroughly disappointed. It has taken several days to upgrade from Vista Ultimate to Window 7 Ultimate on a Toshiba R600. With a couple of exceptions, all the software belongs to Microsoft Office or Adobe.
So far the following has happened.
- My flash drives and USB connections continually disappear, requiring a full shutdown, removal of the battery and power cable, discharging the machine by pressing the start button and then putting it all back together again.
-If I try to do anything else while installing a piece of software, for example checking my mail, the installation stalls and all control of the installation is lost, requiring shutting down and rebooting.
-Windows media has locked all my music and ebooks, although they were paid for and downloaded form Amazon and other legitimate sites.
-The driver install is another operation where control is lost for no apparent reason, even though the splash screen icon is visible on the task bar.
-So far I have had to download nearly 2gig of updates and security fixes.
-Access to the more advanced controls now appears to be through a command line in the search window, which has no history.
-The classic view, which was less cluttered and faster to navigate, is now limited.
All in all a huge step back. I am preparing to go on a trip, but will reinstate my back up of Vista on my return. I may even go back to XP.
I started installing iTunes a little while ago. In that time I have watched Count Down, made and drunk a cup of tea, had a shower and changed ready to pick up the kids. And guess what? It's still running. Life's too short for this.
More overpriced rubbish from Microsoft June 8, 2010 I was wondering why the large corps where keeping XP and slow to change to Win7 not even looking at Vista, now I know why.
This software was purchased for a computer that needs a windows operating system to run certain software at present the machine runs Vista.
The first problem was the security key was rejected. To cut a long frustrating story short, it seems the Ulti version of Win7 has been pirated and to protect their interest Microsoft allow only one install. If you clean install every six months it means contacting Microsoft to get permission. Thats if you can get the copy up and running for the first install also as Microsoft are putting keys on a block list its tough on you if the key you have is in the list even if your copy of the software is legitimate. The other concern is that certain tags are now put on your MB bios so if you wipe/change your hard drive your system is known.
The hassle you have to go through to get your copy of Microsoft validated with the call centre in India is unbelievably time consuming.
I loaded XP pro again to compare speed. XP is faster on startup. Win7 gives you a lot of baggage that only a few will ever use. As for the other machine we will install XP Pro again.
I have changed my netbook over to Ubuntu running from a USB flash drive and its still faster to load than Win7.
Given up with Bills mob now after a lifetime of windows problems.
The only good news the company I brought my copy from refunded my money and gave 100% support.
Amazed June 1, 2010 Hans J. Varfjell I installed the 64 bit version on a 2 1/2 year old Asus G2S portable, along with an extra 1 Gb of ram, for a total of 4 Gigs. Compared to the original Vista ultimate installation the computer seemed to suddently come to life. The G2S is a kind of an oddball but most present devices were found and installed automatically right away and the few that were not recognized I got from the G2Sg Vista 64 driver kit at the Asus site. They do not provide 64 bit drivers for the G2S itself, which is kind of odd and bad service on Asus's behalf, but I found a tip on the user forum that pointed me to the G2Sg-driver kit. The only other place I needed to look were the Nvidia site to get the 64 bit video drivers for the graphics card, as that's more or less the only real difference between the G2S and the G2Sg.
This pc had caused me lots of frustration and disappointments in it's original state, so I would have been happy to notice just a little bit of an improvement. The end result exceeded every expectation and hope I may have had. The pc is responding fast, I can run DAW SW with ASIO without any noticeable latency. Running Vista the ASIO latency must have been close to 1/2 second, which came as a very big disappointment. Now, finally I can start using the pc for what I intended when I bought it.
I am very happy with my "new" pc. Lots of bang for a modest buck.
