Wake up light works, but buttons are terrible. July 23, 2010 Scaffolding Merchant (Cheltenham, Gloucestershire) I like the way this wakes me up with a gradual sunrise effect, but the problem is that I tend to wake up when the light first comes on about 15 minutes before the alarm, but if I turn down the brightness, I tend to sleep through it. Also, it's easy enough to roll over or bury my head under the pillow to block out the light. I would also have liked the ability to set the alarm to specific days, although I suppose that's a lot to ask for. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the buttons are really poor. They are basically dials that press in. If I want to turn off the lamp, I have to press the lamp dial in, but when I try to press it, the whole unit moves across the table unless I hold onto it.
Not a good buy! July 21, 2010 Helen I bought this for my daughter but the instructions are not clear; the controls are fiddly; and, unless we're not understanding it properly, needs to be re-set every night which is a bit of a nuisance.
I also though I'd read in the blurb that you could put it on at night and it would gradually dim over a period of time but this doesn't seem to be the case.
Gathering dust now, I'm afraid.
Excellent... June 24, 2010 Chris Kline This is am amazing wake-up light and most importantly it is very elegant. Looks wonderful in my bedroom.
When it works it is brilliant but... June 3, 2010 Alison (Derbyshire, UK) We had this lamp for about 4 months before it developed a fault. For those 4 months (December to April) it was fantastic and it really improved how we woke each morning. The light gradually gets brighter as it gets towards the set alarm time and gradually rouses you. Our chosen alarm was the chirping birds and along with the light it was recreating dawn for us during the dark winter months. I used to really struggle to wake and would press the snooze button on our old alarm clock a few times before actually getting up. If you want to get to sleep gradually then the lamp can be set to slowly dim into darkness.
This clock was brilliant and I would have heartily recommended it - until it broke. One evening we switched it on and it made a loud pop followed by a horrid acrid smell. It may have been the bulb that went, but as that is not user replaceable (it's all sealed up) the whole unit had to go back. Philips were very quick to respond to tell us that, yes, it should be returned and it should be returned via Amazon. Amazon were then very quick to arrange the return. DHL came and took the item away without me having to spend any money on postage. So full marks for the return process.
Unfortunately Amazon were out of their own stock so the only option was for a refund. However, I'm just not sure I would buy a replacement now anyway - it works well when it works but is is reliable enough to risk another go? It's also increased massively in price since I made the original purchase. It's such a shame as I can see the winter months are going to be back to the struggle to wake up and get up!
The best weapon against Monday mornings April 24, 2010 L. Hady (England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Normally reviews start with the opening impressions of the product in question, but please excuse my mis-ordering of what follows as I start the end.
Imagine, if you will, waking up in the following manner: In the dark of your room, you've gently stirred out of sleep as a barely noticeable glimmer of light has made itself known to its surroundings. You float in and out of that last dream (yes the world cup winning-goal one) and over the next half hour, that little light grows in strength to offer a strong glow from the corner of the room. Thanks to its dull incremental light, which you've set at a strength you prefer; you've most likely woken up, slowly stretching in the comfortable silence of your bed and, begun to order your thoughts of what to do next. If however your night or sleep was a little heavy, after the half hour glow, the tone of chirping birds softly encroaches into the room and eases you out of sleep with a natural sound warming your ear, again incrementally rising , til even the deepest of sleepers is up and awake.
If you like the sound of waking up like this, excuse the over indulgence of the above and buy one of these lamps. I used to wake every morning to the shrill ring of my phone alarm and wished that my phone was a person so I could punch it in the face rather than simply press the `off' button.
But now every stirring is smooth and easy, feeling a lot more like I suppose it should feel, if I lived somewhere rural rather than south London, it makes a massive difference to my mornings (til the tube wears that good feeling away) and even though it's a lot for what is essentially an alarm clock the simply pleasure of waking in stages is well worth the outlay.
Thoroughly recommended.
