Amazon.co.uk Review
Now this is how you destroy the world. Roland Emmerich's 2012 pounces on a Nostradamus-style loophole in the Mayan calendar and rams the apocalypse through it, gleefully conjuring up an enormous amount of Saturday-matinee fun in the process. A scientist (Chiwetel Ejiofor) detects shifting continental plates and sun flares and realizes that this foretells the imminent destruction of the planet. Just as the molten lava is about to hit the fan, a novelist (John Cusack) takes his kids on a trip to Yellowstone; later he'll hook up with his ex (Amanda Peet) and her new boyfriend (Tom McCarthy) in a global journey toward safety. If there is any safety. The suitably hair-raising plot lines are punctuated--frequently, people, frequently--by visions of mayhem around the globe: the Vatican falls over, the White House is clobbered (Emmerich's Independence Day was not enough on that score), and the California coastline dives into the Pacific Ocean. Unlike other action directors we could name, Emmerich actually understands how to let you see and drink in these vast special-effects vistas--and they are incredible. He also honors the old Irwin Allen disaster-movie tradition by actually shelling out for good actors. Cusack and Ejiofor are convincing even in the cheesiest material; toss in Danny Glover (the U.S. president), Woody Harrelson (a nut-bar conspiracy-theorising radio host), Thandie Newton, and Oliver Platt, and you've got a very watchable batch of people. Emmerich hasn't developed an ear for dialogue, even at this stage in his career, and the final act goes on a bit too long. This is a very silly movie, but if you've got a weakness for B-movie energy and hairbreadth escapes, 2012 delivers quite a bit of both. --Robert Horton

Nothing but tosh and fluff. Mindless and full of stereotypes. Even the big set-piece disatser scenes have been done before, and better.

5 out of 5 stars The best disaster film ever made. Plot: run you're going to die :-)   July 22, 2010
A.Chez (U.K.)
I don't understand all the 1 star reviews. Boring? Are we watching the same film here. It's the most explosive film ever (Yellowstone, WOW!). I'd give it 5 stars just for that part of the film alone but I'm not. Everything else about the film was amazing also. The CGI throughout the film is spectacular and there are some major disasters that haven't really been talked about in any other films like the Earth crust displacement theory and Yellowstone. Here, you get them all in one. Absolute mahem. I was so glad to see John Cusack as the main actor as he is one of my favourites and a really good actor. Woody Harrelson played his role really well and was totally believable so I don't know where all these bad reviews are coming from. Nobody can deny that this film is AMAZING! Get over it already.

Don't bother renting it, just buy it at this price. You'll definitely want to see it again.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful disaster movie   July 20, 2010

As with many blockbuster disaster type movies the credibility is stretched well beyond the possible, but it is still a breathtakingly visual feast that frequently had me on the edge of my seat and nearly peeing myself with excitement. The disc played without problems also, so good quality and well packed as usual by Amazon and delivery 2 days earlier than given, so all good.

2 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE RUBBISH   July 18, 2010
R. G. Williams (Cheshire, England , UK)
I don't know where to start with this review, so I will keep it brief.

This film is pants. The one and only positive is the special effects.

The rest...

- Awful script
- boring
- appalling acting (Woody Harrelson is awful)
- cliche, cliche, cliche
- highly unconvincing in every aspect
- far too long

Aimed at 10 - 12 year olds.

Stay well away!

3 out of 5 stars Meh   July 15, 2010

Really that's the best title I could give to my review, this film is just a shrug of the shoulders and turn away kind of affair. Yes, it's cliched, what do people expect? Yes, if the characterisation was any thinner one dimensional would not only be fair but literal. Again, so what? It's a Roland Emmerich disaster movie, I'd be shocked if I found myself thinking after viewing this "hm, that was a deep character study of how humanity deals with the apocalypse", I'm watching this to see multimillion dollar special effects and goofy one liners.

So to get to the thrust of it, special effects, actually surprisingly good in an awe inspiring way. Characters, yep most are duds, especially the lead family headed by John Cusack. Not any of these actors faults really, they've got nothing to work with. But a couple of highlights, Danny Glover makes a pretty good US President, and Woody Harrelson has fun as a conspiracy nut (a role he can do in his sleep, but I'd pay to watch anyway). While as another plus this film is surprisingly funny, and intentionally so, there are a number of sight gags to keep a watch for.

But overall this is just so very, very, average, and commits the misstep of virtual every big budget film of the last five years, a huge and nonsensical running time. Even the special features are pretty lame, an alternate ending which is there solely it seems to show off the editors wise choices with the main cut. It's not a crime against cinema, unless you consider being average and predictable to be mortal sins, then this is a bit of a disaster movie in that sense.
