Magical Romantic Comedy August 2, 2010 Anything ('Under the Sea') This is a wonderful film. It's unique, romantic, funny, whimsical & fantastical.
It has a meaningful story and a very sweet relationship between Penelope and the leading male.
I love the music, the style & fairytale theme. Definitely one of my favourite movies.
It's a feel good movie and deserves greater interest and praise. A film for everyone.
I wish more films were like this one. Highly recommend!
A Lovely Little Fairy Tale. June 11, 2010 Hollie (UK) My life wouldn't be complete without the odd movie night spent on my mum's sofa watching the latest kids films she's managed to pick up cheap. And because of this I've seen some real gems that would normally have passed me by. Penelope is one of those gems.
This is a lovely little fairy tale about a rich family whose daughter is born with the face of a pig. Suitor after suitor runs screaming from the sweet little lady with the slightly dodgy nose. Until along comes the underdog. Scruffy and down on his luck, only James McAvoy can win the heart of Christina Ricci's cursed little rich girl.
Addressing the usual issues of beauty being skin deep and personality shining through, this offers nothing very origional. But it is a very enjoyable family film that has you rooting for the inevitable happy ending. It also has a remakably Brittish cast by way of McAvoy, Richard E Grant, Ronnie Ancona, Nick Frost, and Russel Brand.
So special this may not be, but enjoyable it is, and comes highly recommended from me.
Lovely modern fairytale! April 23, 2010 Joe Brian (Conisbrough) Penelope is an enjoyable film about a teenage girl who has the nose of a pig! After years of being trapped away by her overprotective mother, Penelope finally escapes and witnesses what a beautiful world awaits her. If you are not the kind of person who likes fairytales, then you will probably not enjoy the film as much, but if you love a classic story about a girl who needs to marry a rich man to break a curse, then this is definitely the film for you. After being accepted by other people, Penelope finally accepts herself for who she is and the curse is then broken. The film shows that it's what's inside that counts, not your appearance, and that you don't need anyone but yourself to be happy.
Charming October 30, 2009 Dismal Angel (Scotland) Charming little fairy tale starring Christina Ricci as Penelope, a cursed woman of twenty-five who has had to live her whole life in secret due to the fact she was born with the face of a pig. The conditions of her curse dictate that before Penelope's curse can be lifted, she must be accepted by one of her own. Hopeful, her parents begin to arrange suitors for Penelope to meet with, a two-way mirror being the only way she can communicate with anyone until she feels confident enough to reveal herself, but the matchmaking plan has failed for seven years, leaving Penelope feeling hopeless, and trapped.
A gambling addict with a dire need of money (James McAvoy)is roped by an investigative reporter into entering Penelope's house as a suitor to get pictures of the pig-faced woman for the tabloids, but begins to find himself somewhat drawn to Penelope, despite all he knows is her voice and has a vague idea that she's disfigured in some way; their meeting in the flesh is rather unsuccessful, and causes Penelope to finally flee from the confines of the house she's spent the last twenty-five years trapped in - but can a pig-faced woman blend into society without being noticed?
Very much a fairytale, and obviously predictable in every sense of the word (as fairytales obviously are), but is a great deal of fun, and entertaining. Surprisingly even the prosphetic pig's nose can't spoil Christina Ricci's natural almost elf-like beauty in this romantic fairytale.
Four out of five for effort :)
